Description
Apparition or reality of an unchecked appetite? Metaphor in object form the image is view able in several ways. Abstract and ambiguous only imagination can unfold the layers of subjects devouring each other...A play of mind? A trick, an illusion? Does that really matter?
The form - once a photograph of common reality - now holds a narrative that speaks to an unsettling attitude that plagues our era....Layers of frantic 'devouring' that metaphor our consumer and corporate appetite; call it greed, power or other!
The above description allows me to raise another issue that has loose connection and though it does not mimic, it does parallel...
IMPLICATE OF FANTASY ADDICTION
What is this addiction to Fantasy that has blossomed into reality; enframing the contemporary mindset? Can it be discerned, understood or compartmentalized? And its impediment be contained so that the gift of imagination can present the 'true' to our minds?
I contend that fantasy, of late, echoes the societal necessity for its heroes, its heroines, its leaders, its Lords; the champions who mimic, give form to human aspiration and ascent into light that tomorrow beckons. By that I suggest tomorrow's potential to evolve to our abilities and capacity to be in sympathy with the world, the universe and all that is yet alien to human experience. In such suggests a sympathy more in the fashion of what it meant and respected in ancient times 'sympathia cosmos', advocating the mutual interaction of all things; and 'everything holds life'...
Many people today feel that; even intuit that but won't allow themselves to live that! Sophistication and enlightenment insist reality on 'knowledge' even when knowledge has not revealed its other side - for that humanity pays the price of 'mistakes' then is lashed in its consequence, shedding tears and fostering ever more doubt and debate upon itself - before absorbing tonight's line-up of fantasy to ease the guilt! Understanding then suffers, or as is the case, eschews true imagination and the possible which begs to be real.
We have not forgotten these things but merely lost sight to them. They fall through the cracks between bliss and agony, cobble stoning our unprecedented cadence of new discovery. Mostly due to the jolt of our devised technologies - not suggesting that the problem is contemporary for it has been an exponential progression, building velocity for hundreds of years. We have lost sight of 'time' by our reliance on the conveniences supported by the system built round us; a system that would have shocked in both awe and terror a human's mind [and imagination] so short a time ago. I dare say for all that it has provided in bliss, contemporaries seem to experience more agony these days - or so it appears by the profit statements of the pharmaceutical empire. Lace into that the daily bombardment of news and it is no wonder that crowds gather at every venue and device for a hit of fantasy to ease the pain!
Fantasy is nothing new but it 'was' seen for what it was; and so too was imagination. Why then are we afraid to distinguish the difference? Especially that the distinction is most assuredly used 'at us' - us being the blissful who elect and elicit others to provide everything that sustains us, allowing our fantasy of sophistication. The industries that sustain our comforts depend on the distinction and effort themselves to deliver fantasy, sweetened evermore, to attract our attention, dollar and ultimately our souls... Are they nefarious? That would depend on our own maturity, awareness and accountability for desiring such a fashion de vivre. For we might like to cast blame but also we need to accept our complicity...Another factor that is not forgotten but conveniently lost to sight. If 2016 announces anything it must shed light that we have taken our eyes off too much of what is done in our name; for we are our system, for better or worse.
If there is a binder that couples the diverse industries [other than the obvious greed that is spotlighted repeatedly] that administer a desired behavior then what is its credo? To what ends does it desire? Some idealism might be at play but at this juncture it can only be regarded as nefarious because it has no symmetry; its stealth and complexity assure it other than a calm reception if exposed for view. It is anything but direct; more like a charmer than candidly sharing its motivation. Behavior so described most often attach to manipulation - the nature of which is nefarious! Must be reminded the Pied Pipers' entice! No fantasy but a living lesson - who might you cast for the role?
Though the difficulties to our distinction are not fully expressed above, they are implied in the implications that I have so far raised. It is not so much to point to specifics to grasp the issue, as it is to notice the effects of remaining unaware of the distinction. Imagination propels us at potentials that are 'possible', we say then that they are 'true'. Fantasy grips us from the possible, and propels us at the impossible and in so doing absorbs our time, making it ever harder to keep up to the ever unfolding 'possible' of true potential. As to the specifics: that is for each person to imagine...and that implies spending precious time to do so! For if there ever might be a purpose to life, part of it surly will be coupled to our own experiences in time - for time is a thing of our world and its experience here brings it in sympathia to all else that unfolds: in this world or other...
