Description
'Appearance of Clouds' from 1977 is an interpretation more than an imagined space; it arose from a photograph taken in the mid-'60s while on vacation.
As I remember, it was on Ektachrome and in keeping with the film's tendency was marked in a bluish cast; perfect for the measure of light that filtered through and onto the passing storm clouds. So thick where the clouds overhead, that the foreground was barely more than a silhouette...and it was like sitting in a darkened movie theater, where the only light was far at front, glimmering across the projection screen...And I was most impressed! Or was it that the 'sand dune' was announcing the beach's approach?
Though I can remember the event of its taking, as if it was in progress as I type, all else of that trip is a mash of most other memories, of junkets involving sand and surf. Memory and remembrance are subjectively adhered, it would seem. Perhaps it is why I have enjoyed my cameras all the long years...'Enjoy' is only part of my fancy of cameras; it is a respected companion, even to this day allowing a threshold to be entered; where all else becomes quiet, subdued, and another world materializes to my senses.
What is fixed of form, by emulsion or pixel, might 'appear' to be static; but appearances defy, appearances are simply trapped in a mindset! Mind, laced of imagination, provokes image; animates form, until the form speaks...and only needs a pliable mindset to be heard. Talkative, telling narrative that is less locked in instant than the pixels themselves; as the perceiver changes, of time, so too the intimate differences that are trapped in associations 'transmute', if only in subjective imply...
What the image was in the sixties, was added to in the seventies; by the eighties it questioned all of what it seemed to have been; and continued to question and morph in meaning, for more than another decade! And in its 'appearance' today, it is more 'gray' in questions; than black & white of answers...

Terrance, I so did enjoy the reading of your Description, the evolving of the work, through your eyes and heart, to then stop here, at a most beautifully created , unique vision. I too take my old artworks to new expression...it is a way of life, for those of us with 'history', and time .. to respond anew, now!.....Compliments, fav, VIVA

As you know VIVA I make use of the 'description' box to unravel what I 'hear' (so to speak) discussed in mind from my reviewing of the imagery. Telling my little stories is also my way to reassure those of younger generations that they can 'indulge their creative mind with doses of dialog' and actually learn from themselves as much as from a stranger - more often than they might imagine! We live in interesting circumstances; that is, these instant libraries at hand, are treasure troves that readily respond to 'questions' and an artist is a Bundle of Questions, each of which having subjective responses makes for an education in the making - if the person engages and interacts. Well, this old image has been shedding 'suggestions' for decades now; it is an example .... But really that is what my 'art' is: Examples of Suggestion made to form by just another guy! As part of my efforts working with pen-and-ink, this example of 'pointillism' was part of a Paris showing of American drawing in 1979. But it is as well one of only a few images that were developed from photos - a practice I halted shortly after this work. What most intrigues me, is how the ideas found in the image seem to 'mature' and announce new information and new Questions that can be considered and/or re-considered...1977 is far on the line of time; but as apparent as this morning's coffee!
