Description
It is pretentiously scoffed today that 'nothing truly original is possible' (by way of artistic imagery); mimesis, implied as imitation, mimicry, imitatio or other is not what is put forward (evolving) by a creative activity seeking its subject anew and it is not an empty object of 'originality' (in novelty) that is the finish-line sought.
I dare not imply that I might speak for the artists of old - not even when they expressed 'originality' as the telos to their work since they might not have had the same intentionality in mind for the word.
Yet I might suggest that ostensibly originality exists and is intrinsic to creative image, living-image as I am fond to refer, through the consequence reached by the viewer. As images of consequence, the forms take effect by way of an imagination - of which no two can be said to be categorical or clone. The image perceived is always an 'original' event, objectification and narrative upon an independent imagination...And why is that necessary to an artist or viewer at large?
Only so far that it allows said artist or viewer the opportunity to relate fully to the image and 'its narrative' without prejudice by a third party who is not involved in the dialogue or has no capacity, desire or need for an original or unique dialogue - especially if the dialogue flies in the face of a populous view or mindset.
Even while the pigmented puddles still saturated the paper of this image, its configuration to come was visible. And even as I awaited its parchness, my line-brush was primed with dense paint...each stroke to come, made familiar to my mind by the unfolding scenario of imagination's discourse.
By scenario is meant that the representation was evident, though not the implications, only the contextual symmetry qua correspondences. In this case, the narrative is yet unfurling; and in areas I might never have imagined possible - all marvelously ripe of potential and possibility (as opposed to 'impossibility')!
Even as I pen this outward description, questions and implications have been begging me into explore...from the correspondences of iconic figuration to historical align with philosophic, scriptural and ritual entanglements. Each account a new lecture, lesson or amazing fact to add to my experience; and each guided by imagination's inquisitive whispers!
...more to come. Such as: How is Gideon (Mighty Man of Valour) arrived at? By way of posture, imagination or other blend - especially in face of the culture body and these specific times? And how it leads to yet another image; one that speaks of 'passage from the seemingly conflicting arguments' to a clearer path of quieting calmness...
