Description
In this case, what I wish to example is how the innocence of common marking, doodling, opens into an imaginal storehouse of waiting image; or might we say, the potential of image to arrive fixed to format - be the format two dimensional, three dimensional or might we extend analogy to a string of notes, on bars of music...Wherever imagination finds a way to translate: image as 'imaginal' is close at hand!
So what exactly was my 'intention' in provoking the unfocused line play to come to rest, and take configure; and prompt imagination to cultivate 'forms' that might well be discerned to other eyes than my own?
The activity that provoked this image was an exercise; an experiment of sorts to develop a free state-of-mind. Or might I qualify it better as a 'Stateless' place of mind, since I was attempting to merely let the serendipity of the moment, leave its trace upon the paper, without forethought, image, memory or idea, interfere with: 'what might arrive' in the 'absence' of ego consciousness.
The practice started more than a year prior to the date on the image; and it needs be stated, that the practice persists to this day. Other than images arrived of a camera, all the imagery that you find of my hand, arrives from where or whatever we qualify as imagination - in that, what I call imagination is premised in what is referred as 'Imaginal'.
That last statement carries implications that fly beyond anything psychological and are not put to rest in philosophy, though the lineage of philosophy makes more than passing mention. Much might be found in the philosophy of Aesthetics but where 'imagination' is concerned, no one philosopher has dared to encapsulate the expanse that it continues to unfold to human minds.
A wise and older artist once shared to me the most pressing problem that weighs an artists mind, he said: "The biggest problem to the artist is 'What to Paint'...". I followed his advice and have never been thus so perplexed; I merely follow, rather than lead the image into its configure; my objective is to 'cultivate the image' to the best of my abilities...And those abilities include 'listening' to the imaginal tales of the images that arrive - in plenitude!

PRESENTED IN FORUM
'Round and round... the lines of my pencil would glide over the pristine paper, while my eyes remained closed, and my concentration was no more than the attempt to empty all anticipation from my mind... And without prescription or rules when the moment 'seemed' right, my hand would lift the pencil from the paper and my eyes would survey - from all directions - until it was most obvious that the seemingly ambiguous melody needed only 'Eyes' to be danced to!........That was my process in 1985 - it still is today!' - 5nov21 -tdp

The Thanks goes to you for opening the thread for this most important subject. By sharing the personal experiences, a community of like-minded creative minds present a compelling case for maintaining these events as part of consciousness, but also as a source of intuitive exercise... Necessary for our creative spirit and needing to be promoted more as an area of study! Thank you for your thread. Best, Terrance
