Title
Imagination's Proposition to Thought
Artist
Terrance DePietro
Medium
Painting - Watercolor
Description
In survey of the implications of creative pursuits, imagination, bar none, reaches far beyond aesthetics or ability. Mere rendering, be it to the abstract or of the kinds of expression, representational or other, examines a present moment.
To move beyond that moment needs a proposition of imagination to invigorate reflection. And invigorate thought we must, for when one stops...takes notice... they well realize that what they are is basically a mind transported in a vehicle; and that mind is aware of itself, trying to find - if only as a question - sense to the earliest questions.
Light, airy and obvious to spontaneity, 'Imagination's Proposition to Thought' was itself not a thought, image-of-mind or designed exercise. If anything might be said, it swept across the paper into lakes of pigmented water which came to rest and dried, leaving its colored residue fixed in place, motionless and in need of an imagination to impregnate it with liveliness as a 'proposition to thought'!
So it received some further encouragement in the form of cultivating lines...yet it was only on its 'intuitive' completion that imagination's proposals were first recognized...it was never an instant of thought until the paint dried. And what was the first thought of it?
What parole evolved from the imaginal perceived forms and re-invigorated imagination? And the most pressing question was spoken in mind: "How did that arrive so perfectly complete and unique from my hand"!? For it surely is a story; it surely has voice; it surely was never thought of by a mind...But yet it is so - from this moment onward and evermore.
And it is not merely one story or tale - and surely not fable or fantasy – but so many more. It is logical even if it is not rational because it makes perfect sense to the questions of the past and this very day... How a mind's thoughts and imagination’s vitality spin into a historical impression of what philosophers refer as: Life's Mysteries...
Our observed 'paradox of metaphors' and 'purposive ambiguities', consequential to life itself, reflect what we search: in forever question. Coming to peace when visited on a canvas or paper; so stained by temporal residues of color, line; and imagination's proposition to contemplation.
The viewer is invited to tell their own story of said image and record it as a 'comment'... 13nov16 - tdp
ADDITIONAL THOUGHT 9nov21
Upon entering my office this morning, this image greets me from its eye-level perch affixed the wall… and suggests: More than the original proposal; in fact it reveals much more about intuition, in the ‘feminine-intuition’ sense than ever imagined.
And as I am inclined to believe that much critical negativity thrust at women arose from some sort of incident involving intuition, the image in question, certainly displays elements suggestible to the like.
So as I read the image, interpreting the forms from bottom to top, I am first greeted by a profile, a cameo of sorts from which all else develops. Up and out, a conduit streams; churning, with minimum suggest but gathering forms, volume and even ghostly apparitions left; and ambiguous characters to the right. But even more impressive is the central shape with its squinting expression, and indefinable pretense – all seems to circulate by its gravity…
That much I am sure of; and if in fact center stage stares back at the viewer with some stubborn resolve, then imagining, for myself, suggests fear as much as anything else – fear of what or whom?
I can suppose it involves women, the implications of intuition and some fear harbored by man – the quorum of ghostly figures has a sensibility of maleness; and that would bring some balance… really it is more a feeling… I wonder what you see or feel. 9nov21 -tdp

Sorry I am putting my comment up again for clarity. Hi Terrance, I like to look at your work and to try to find what's "it is for me", where Imagination will bring me. In this case, not only the image itself invite you to do so but also the title of the piece give rise to more exploration. This is where spontaneously, the Imagination brought me in the form of the following poem: In her head a tempest... An intensive turbulence ... Suddenly arising in her mind... Sweeping memories in her path... Bringing her to a celestial destination. I hope my short comment will encourage someone else to let you know their own story of said image.
