Description
'In Opening a Scroll of Memories', it might even be the title for a book, a reminiscence, scenario for feature film, or simply a 'marker' for the artist to locate remote purpose.
Even the artist may need to be reminded of the first associations that danced in mind in consequence to a new and unique image that arrived to canvas. Especially, that with time those young associations become lost to all the change that one, fixed and static image undergoes... At least so to the mind of the first viewer who induced an association; then lived with it from that time forward...
In this newest case, the image sparked to mind a place that my thoughts had been circling in the early '80s: when explore left the light of day, for the light that has no name; a formless spark that ignites some imaginal purpose, vigorously, from the reaches known only as Intuition. And no other explain accompanied it; no rhyme, rhythm or reason visible, at least at that moment; and so a choice was made; in said case to follow where it might project.
Those earliest thoughts were centered around the marks being a type of calligraphy; and as it turned out, the thoughts were not far from the mark. And the ramifications of that early explore are yet being expanded on. Not only in the solitude of my private work spaces but have become party to research, in a spectrum of directions that human minds can conceive. More recently in the rethink of 'subjectivity' in its potential of 'a next', and therein, revisit a sort of 'purposiveness'; furthering the time old questions glimmering in the realm of Teleology: intrinsic purposes, telos, etc.
Of course the implications are almost boundless; yet the domain of 'image', 'imaginal' and imagination are at the heart of these objective treatments, wished as art or artifact; of a culture's questioning of the mysteries that yet surround its time.
So to this image, which might refer itself as a playful intention of gesture, a whimsical automatic configuring, it is not known how a public would conclude the freely floating forms. Are they arranged as totem? Are they a swirling top or a descending calligraphy, representing actions, words or phases? Is the form 'meditative', ambiguously taken-in, digested, only to exit as a 'feeling' or further idea, or attitude?
Or would a public even remember that such a questioning posture is, not only acceptable, but most necessary and consequential to the telos of the image, the artist - and possibly each other viewer?
But there I am again!...Resting in the purposive ambiguity of image, its language and this life long explore...
