Description
In the recent explore of new patterns of thought, thinking, a re-think of 'subjective' perceptions has been gaining momentum. Searching these patterns has come to be termed 'prospecting'; and not surprisingly has implications in image generating, even if the philosophical community is still insecure in their directedness at imagery attached to 'art'.
It is not surprising that philosophy is weary of art, given the acknowledgement of sensate reality, perception of reality, not being trustworthy! Yet 'image', modern image, is perhaps the closest objective form that subjective-ness might take. When Plato disparaged 'art' (image making), he could not have imagined modern-abstraction - even if the implications of such an image glanced his intuitive nature.
Modern image, in all its attempts, was moving toward a freedom that was unimaginable less than two hundred years ago; and in all that it opened to mind in the concern to aesthetics, it's more profound implications - I believe - are on the horizon...
For one, modern image, in result to Abstract Expressionism, had pushed image to an abysmal depth, a paradox of metaphor, i.e., non-image. And it is not as if 'non-image' was an objective idea being sought, through the endless stream of targeted sub-divisions that erupted on the scene. Those tributaries, each in search of a 'next' image, or an 'image of its time', were necessary, consequential of the zeitgeist that invigorated it all. Yet only when the 'meaningful coincidence' of the imagery and the zeitgeist, united, became seamless, did the event of Modernism find the visual analogy, the principle, necessary to leap into 'a next'!
The thrust of Modernism, along with the topos themes; the underlying motive was to erase the past; empty all tension of duality; abandon the answers that Reason imposed; and provide a Tabula rasa for the 'next' impressions to be inscribed.
And if 'answers' were no longer the object of desire sought, then what would fill its shoes? But more so, how would the next be recognized; and where would it announce itself?
Given the turn of events that arrived, historically, hindsight notwithstanding, announce had already been made, though not recognized. And if answers were wanting; how far to their opposite would one find their replacement? And as something unknown prompts many questions, 'questions' would become the new answers; this time in metaphor to paradox.
As well, the new searching for patterns of mind is going to extremes. The objectivity long thought to be the path of enlightenment, it seems, was to now be retrofitted with its time old counterbalance: subjectivity - and that means a new era of Questions! What better to stimulate questions than image; modern image; abstract, ambiguous image; and lace it with a touch or two of the 'Imaginal'! And 'imaginal' is the ambiguity of imagination's announcement; the 'wonder', so to speak, prior to mind, ego or knowledge; a cusp of conjecture before fantasy taints.
So then, the title 'Prospecting by Layers', is a refer to the process of encountering subjective implications that suggest to an attitude 'potentialities'; and, in this case, noticeably, if one form pushes to front, then it can, as well, be replaced or moved back, and allow other form primary position. Each new configuration suggests a new narrative; only a viewer's disposition determines the imaginal trajectory. Subjectivity reigns, and the layers may move, making the experience everlasting to the viewer's endless associations and their correspondences.
Such non-static potential was not recognized back when; and if it had been, history could have never slammed the door to Modern!
