Description
Each part of an ancient forest has an origin and its story; here in the Catskills is no different. These mountains are some of the oldest of this earth; and for centuries they were deep beneath a mile or more of ice.
And the ice shifted and slide across the shelves of limestone from north to south - How long, how swiftly; how slowly? When it was over, with nothing to move the morsels more, they sat, weathered and became safe haven for roots and other life that clung at the soil and stone wedged along the escarpment.
When we walk among the brush and bramble that flourishes away from the trails, spring reveals its thick assortments still clinging for a place to weather and multiply. Between the green patches the gray of limestone, covered in moss and other, marks history as mere residue.
Temporal are the leaves of spring; Timeless are the massive spall of times that never saw counting.
As motif, the boulders in themselves are spectacular; but when salted with spring's richness, add morning's glow and an eye to appreciate, the story starts over - if only in one solitary imagination.
How contrary to these times; peaceful, intimate and safe it all seems.
