Description
Now what might such title determine? Surly such notion is nowhere embraced within the trinket offered? Or might it be gripping essence at the very spot of its arrival?
As is the norm the titles one places, direct the viewer, as much as inform. This instance is no different; only that the emphasis is not to the resting place as much as to a situation of time. Has the artist conjured such as ploy? I assure you not!
I have approached the image, in privacy, for more than ten years; had notions of it follow me about; cling; only to fade away for lack of range. And I never gave in; perhaps knowing well: it was whispering but I was not listening.
Preparing it for debut had been no different; until it dawned, the subject was not to the static moment depicted but what might arrive in such static instant. ‘There, but not there’ - All in effect of correspondences, rather than, mere portrayal.
What is portrayed is commonly understood: a rainy day, clouds filtering golden light into shimmer of silver; wetness, interrupted stillness; seasonal bleaching; and little more. Yet all the more to the temperament a mind might take if given a lull – a season – from all place other than the static-image might suggest.
And as much as, therein, I find correspondences in simile; the ever more of metaphor - with its zest of paradox – extends the meaningfulness beyond the lines of this article in ever evolving fashion. Like a companion, each morning, describing dreamland from the night before; only dreamland is my-land (or your-land), and the time is anytime I find lull for my mind’s season away from all other that might distract.
And the depiction is simile to all I’ve stated. Even that it captures a cadence of falling rain drops, the story started sometime earlier. Such is announced by the bleached yet rooted colony of grass combed in consequence of a sustained torrent – much like the weary few to the fore of the resting puddle, surrounded by wafers, remnants of mighty ledges that long ago tumbled from on high, to be swept and polished to every size. Each of them destined to grow, smaller, as they are pushed along the tides of torrents to come.
Much else has arrived since the waters receded, leaves fell from trees, gathering in hollows from the winds that surely skirts the moving creek or blow down from the obvious slopes that our more geometric stones have arrived.
The quality of the light speaks as well – I imagine a ‘tomorrow’ for the scene would bring fair skies! Yet in truth that is quite impossible, as the scene is merely a relic – this playful romancing is my cherished ‘season’. And like any season must abruptly come to end.
Yet again, no end, as the image continues its propose: pending a lull, or a mind’s season!

And your comment gives me cause to pause in the image - which in ways is a window comfortably awake on my wall. I had not thought prior, but there is an interesting dynamic in the composition - something that I rely to intuition to regulate. Specifically, it is evident that the flow of the water runs left to right, descending in its course - and the eye follow that reality readily. But the eye and methodology of the artist is to find a manner to keep the viewer 'in' the composition for the longest duration - captivating within the visible of the image. And somehow it happens here - which surprises me and pleases me. The reflected light of the pool of water seemingly points in the opposite direct to the reality - it balances the drifting eye back to the left and upwards - where it can roll once more downward and off the canvas... Thank you for giving me new pause to enjoy my own work VIVA! -- Terrance

Thank you, Terrance. For me, the stimulous for a photo IS the vision, and/but, what I take away with me IS the scent, the good/bad of detritus, or fresh grass............and it mattered also when I did paint in oils........I was intoxicated by the per-fumes, and even some colours out of the tube, had a scent of their own......one does grow to KNOW this 'element' of our lives in art............as you know, indeed.

Late in coming, I do so agree VIVA; 'scents' are telegraphed in images such as this one; and the scents that surround studios as well enlarges the experience - ritual - of our craft. Thank you for sharing your expertise and this comment. -tdp

Truly a living lull, so peaceful! these receding waters, the bright glow of reflections, all in stillness, motion, the scent of the past, the dancing waters of time, past, to come, all here. For me, the beauty of the myriad colors, of natural decay, of new growth, spark KNOWING all is as it should be. ...Kudos, Terrance, yet again, that you SEE, how you see, through your lens, lyrically, eloquently, through your mind’s eyes, your heart....f.v...VIVA

Thank you VIVA; your comment is a springboard for so many notions that attach to our static, yet talkative images. And I much enjoy your referring to '...the scent of the past...'. That we can feel - through our attitude - these captured events [be they depictions or abstracted essences that tease our sensibilities] by 'smelling' is very telling and I have questioned many times, even in the last image I posted. We think about seeing images but we in fact enjoy them with other senses when our attitude is open to receive the Puffs! TY again for your attentive poetry! - Terrance
